Prepare for a Career in Health Care

The Academy of Health Careers at Lafayette High School is a program of instruction that ensures students selecting a career in health care have opportunities to meet their career and educational goals and are prepared to meet the demands of a rapidly changing professional world.  The following are elements of the program:  partnerships with health care professional agencies; mentors and guest speakers to motivate and encourage students; a School-to-Career emphasis that allows students to see the relevance of school and the "real world" of professional health care; cohort scheduling (teaming with academy teachers in math, science, and their health academy elective) with a sense of caring and support from academy peers and faculty; and an integrated, focused curriculum where multiple courses work in collaboration to make connections with academic materials and health care issues.

Course Offerings

Students enroll in the academy as first time freshman in the Introduction to Health Occupations course OR as a first time sophomore in the Introduction to Health Occupaitons AND Health Science I.  Some courses currently offered include:  Introduction to Health Occupations, Health Science I, II, First Responder, Forensic Science, Certified Nursing Assistant, Pharamacy Technician, Internship, Sports Medicine I, II, III, and Basic Emergency Medical Technician.  Students have an opportunity to dual enroll with South Louisiana Community College and the Louisiana Technical College.
